media and environment


Environment is an issue that not a lot of readers pay attention to. The recent views of koli’s (fishermen) on coastal road project and the protest against coastal road in Juhu was one of the recent environmental news covered by Times of India. But is it actually highlighting the coastal problems? The effects this project would have on marine? After reading it you would agree with me that it doesn’t.
It seems like a political propaganda more than awareness that the paper is trying to spread. This project gave us an opportunity to actually pay attention to minute errors.

Newspaper: The daily mail (e-paper)
Duration: 10th August – 31st August 2015

Daily there are more than 1000 articles published on daily mail with most of them highlighting the political and economic scenarios taking place in the world. These news are mostly male dominant. But what even overshadows the youngsters interest from news around the world is SHOWBIZ. The amount of importance given to such news is shocking. As it is not one article on that particular celebrity but several inter related ones and these publish on a day. This is something even I am a part of.
Indian newspapers don’t highlight environmental issues but political news.
The pie chart below shows the categories of news that are printed on papers daily. According to the analysis we did, only 75 articles (i.e. 5% of the total number of articles) on a day were relating to science. While the showbiz has 525 articles, world news has 225, finance has 300 and political issues having the most i.e. 600. Do you actually read the other categories except science carefully? I doubt anyone in this busy world reads 600 articles. These articles are not only domestic but also international under the category.

Under the science category all articles are not relating to just environment but also the technologic advancements, discoveries and studies conducted my various scientist from varied fields.

As the pie chart shows technological advancements are given 46% weightage out of 75 articles that were published. Environmental issues are given only 20% weightage. But the presentation and research done by the team is well done. They have used different media in order to grab reader’s attention. They not only convey the news but smartly use pictures, facts, charts and videos on e-paper. Under Environmental issues broad number of topics are covered like marine, wildlife and disaster and the reasons behind them. They not only highlight the news but also tell us the reasons behind it and what we can do to avoid it.

The daily mail though doesn’t give enough weightage to environmental issue but it smartly and in an informative manner presents the topic it is conveying.
